The Legendary Anime Concludes a 27-Year Era in 2026

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and featured numerous non-canon storylines. Starting in the new year, once the Egghead Island arc concludes, the animated series will go on a quarterly hiatus until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

From now on, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every year for a cap of two dozen installments. Toei states this will help the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — including more content, tempo, and timing of the source material.” However, Toei end by promising “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which means additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime previously took a half-year pause that started in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the visuals and let the manga to get further ahead to avoid a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The anime couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to supply fans with countless action sequences, high-quality animation, and less filler than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

While some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the occasional interruption in the action. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. According to the news, this may result in a single installment of the anime adapting one chapter, with some alternatively covering one and a half chapters or more to make up for scheduling.

It's the end of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of production, which focused on airing for almost the entire year. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have numerous filler arcs, and the quality of the animation can change drastically between one episode and the next. Today, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two at most coming out each annually, allowing for improved visuals and greater accuracy to the original work.
